Ep 493 - Lean vs Shredded: 8 Differences (& The Reality)

Lean vs Shredded: 8 Differences (& The Reality)

00:06
Back in 2017, when I was four weeks out from a bodybuilding show, I wrote an article for T-Nation called Lean Versus Shredded: The Cold Hard Truth.
00:19
In that article, I broke down the eight major differences between being lean and being shredded, what defines each condition, how to transition out of a shredded state, and what it truly takes to get there.
00:34
At the time, I was crossing the gap between being beach lean and getting truly shredded. I wanted to document the experience honestly, and the article ended up gaining a lot of attention because it explained the reality of what it takes to move from a lean physique to extreme conditioning.
00:53
In this episode, I want to revisit those lessons and explain the difference between being lean and being shredded.

Competition Winner Announcement

01:00
Before we dive in, I want to announce the winner of the anniversary competition.
01:08
The winner of the £100 personalised supplement stack is Harpinder.
01:20
Congratulations, Harpinder. Please email podcast@rntfitness.com with your shipping address, your current goals, and your supplement routine, and I'll put together a stack specifically for you.

Can Everyone Get Shredded?

01:53
The first thing to understand is that almost everyone can get lean.
02:01
We've seen thousands of transformations across different ages, backgrounds, and lifestyles.
02:12
However, not everyone can—or should—get shredded.
02:18
Getting shredded requires an entirely different level of sacrifice, discipline, focus, and discomfort. It's a very different challenge from simply getting lean.

Defining Lean vs Shredded

What Does "Lean" Mean?

02:36
For men, lean is typically around 7–10% body fat.
02:54
For women, lean is generally around 15% body fat, depending on individual factors.

What Does "Shredded" Mean?

03:07
For men, shredded is usually around 4–7% body fat.
03:21
For women, getting into truly shredded territory is generally unnecessary unless competing in bodybuilding.
03:43
The crossover point for men tends to occur around the 6–8% body fat range.

What Does Shredded Actually Look Like?

04:47
When you become truly shredded, your physique takes on a completely different appearance.
05:02
Your skin becomes paper-thin.
05:08
There is almost no visible pinchable body fat.
05:14
Muscle definition becomes dramatically sharper and more pronounced.
05:21
Bodybuilders often describe this as looking "dry" because the physique appears extremely crisp and detailed.

Do You Ever Need To Be Shredded?

05:43
The honest answer is no.
05:49
Unless you're stepping onto a bodybuilding stage, there is no requirement to get shredded.
06:03
For most people, getting lean provides all the benefits:
  •  Looking great
  •  Feeling confident
  •  Maintaining health
  •  Preserving energy
  •  Living a normal life
06:23
Most people are far better off aiming for a photoshoot-lean physique rather than pursuing extreme conditioning.

The 8 Differences Between Lean and Shredded

1. Some Hunger vs Constant Hunger

07:28
When you're getting lean, you'll occasionally feel hungry.
07:34
When you're getting shredded, hunger becomes constant.
07:46
You need to learn to accept hunger as part of the process.
08:03
Meals rarely feel satisfying, and you'll often be thinking about food shortly after eating.
08:37
No amount of food volume tricks completely removes the hunger.

2. Normal Cravings vs Strange Cravings

08:44
When you're lean, cravings are normal.
You might crave:
  •  Pizza
  •  Burgers
  •  Ice cream
08:55
When you're shredded, cravings become bizarre.
09:08
You may find yourself fantasising about foods you normally wouldn't care about.
09:40
You become obsessed with food content, recipes, and unusual food combinations.

3. Happy vs Cranky

10:22
Being lean generally feels fantastic.
Benefits include:
  •  Better mood
  •  High energy
  •  Strong performance
  •  Healthy sex drive
10:36
Being shredded often feels terrible.
Common experiences include:
  •  Irritability
  •  Fatigue
  •  Low motivation
  •  Reduced patience
  •  Poor recovery
11:01
There's an old bodybuilding saying:
"The worse you feel, the better you look."
And unfortunately, that's often true.

4. Flexibility vs Precision

11:19
When you're lean, life remains flexible.
You can:
  •  Miss a workout occasionally
  •  Eat slightly above or below target calories
  •  Adjust your schedule
11:58
When you're shredded, every detail matters.
12:03
Every workout counts.
12:06
Every cardio session matters.
12:10
Food is measured precisely.
12:13
Mistakes become far less forgiving.

5. "Bro Science" Starts Working

13:58
Many bodybuilding techniques seem unnecessary when simply getting lean.
Examples include:
  •  Fasted cardio
  •  Carb cut-offs
  •  Protein-sparing modified fasts (PSMF)
15:22
However, when you're trying to reach extreme levels of leanness, small strategies can sometimes help remove those final stubborn layers of body fat.
15:39
For most people aiming to get lean, these tactics are unnecessary.

6. You Need Muscle

16:13
One of the most important bodybuilding sayings is:
"You can't carve a pebble."
16:27
Without a foundation of muscle, getting extremely lean often results in looking skinny rather than athletic.
16:43
For many people, the journey should be:
  1.  Get lean
  2.  Build muscle
  3.  Get leaner later
17:04
Muscle gives a lean physique shape and structure.

7. Mind Games

17:10
The final weeks of getting shredded are often psychological.
17:18
Your mind constantly tries to convince you to:
  •  Eat more
  •  Skip cardio
  •  Change the plan
  •  Quit early
17:42
You are effectively battling your own instincts every day.
17:49
This is where mental toughness becomes essential.

8. Sacrifice

18:00
Getting shredded requires sacrifice.
18:07
The final few weeks often impact:
  •  Social life
  •  Family time
  •  Business performance
  •  Energy levels
  •  Recovery
18:27
This is why very few people ever reach true contest condition.
18:37
The level of commitment required is far beyond what most people are willing—or need—to do.

Altered Perception of Reality

18:53
One of the biggest challenges after getting shredded is that your perception of "normal" changes.
19:15
Many people begin viewing their stage-ready physique as their new baseline.
19:24
The problem is that shredded is not a healthy long-term condition.
19:40
The real goal should be the sweet spot:
  •  Looking good
  •  Feeling good
  •  Performing well
  •  Having healthy hormones
  •  Maintaining balance

How To Transition Back From Being Shredded

20:04
The most important rule is simple:
Have a plan.
20:20
Without a plan, many people swing from extreme dieting into uncontrolled binge eating.
20:52
A structured reverse diet is crucial.
This means:
  •  Gradually increasing calories
  •  Slowly reducing cardio
  •  Returning to maintenance over 4–6 weeks
21:08
You also need to stay busy.
21:16
After months of focus, life can feel empty without a goal.
21:25
Use this time to reconnect with family, friends, and normal life.

My 2014 Binge-Restrict Mistake

22:31
In 2014, I handled this transition terribly.
22:49
During contest prep, I became completely obsessed with food.
23:12
The moment the competition ended, I swung straight into binge eating.
23:24
The obsession didn't disappear—it simply changed form.
23:40
I realised the problem wasn't dieting itself.
23:43
The problem was oscillating between extremes.

How To Break The Cycle

26:09

1. Stop Extreme Dieting

26:14
You don't need a massive calorie deficit.
A moderate deficit works extremely well.

2. Stop Deprivation

26:48
Binge eating is often a predictable response to prolonged restriction.

3. Eat Consistently

26:58
Monday should look similar to Saturday.
Consistency removes the mental chaos.

4. Let Go of Punishment

27:20
You don't need to "earn" food.
You don't need to punish yourself with extra cardio.
27:33
That mindset keeps the cycle alive.

Final Thoughts

27:48
The lessons from getting shredded eventually helped create the RNT Fitness Five Phase Methodology.
28:02
The biggest lesson I learned was that sustainable success comes from structure, consistency, and balance—not extremes.
28:18
Over time, moving away from obsession allowed me to live in what I call the sweet spot: lean, healthy, strong, and sustainable.
28:38
Thanks for listening, and I'll see you in the next episode.
